Hindi Wikipedia is the Hindi-language version of Wikipedia, owned by the Wikimedia Foundation. The Hindi version was launched in July 2003 and as of December 1, 2014, it has 1,37,909 articles and about 5,46,522 registered members.
Wikipedia is a multilingual project to create authentic knowledge on all subjects and to use, change and redistribute. It is determined to disseminate information with an unbiased view as much as possible. The first English Wikipedia was launched in January 2001, and the Hindi Wikipedia was launched in July 2003. Wikipedia was established as a branch of Nupedia, a free knowledge project, but is now abandoned. A comprehensive peer review system was used in Nupidia and required high-quality contributors, but articles could be written at a much slower pace. In 2000, Nupedia's founder Jimmy Wells and Larry Sanger, who hired him to discuss the project, discussed how to complete Nupedia with a more comprehensive project. A wiki could allow the public to contribute, and Nupedia's first wiki went online on January 10, 2001.
